SAMPLE EXCERPTS

Ch 5 p52: College coach informed me I’d be the 3rd running back
"Coach," I said, "my doctors told me to quit in high school. They said MS would make it impossible for me to play. I've sat out for two years. I even went to Puerto Rico just to get game tape. I'm just grateful for the chance to be here. I'll be the best third running back I can be."
Ch 10 p120: Halftime speech to team before comeback victory
"For most of you, life is going to feel exactly like this at some point. You are going to lose. A lot. Not everything will go as planned, no matter how much you prepare, how hard you work, how much you sacrifice, or how badly you want it. Reality does not care. It will beat you down."
Ch 17 p227: Comparing life with MS to hiking
"Living with MS can feel a lot like hiking a trail," I said. "Parts of the path are flat and manageable. But eventually, there is an incline. It can be a hard climb, and there is no way to skip that part. But it levels off again. And when it does, the most important thing is to stop and take in the view. To recognize what has been overcome. Then you keep hiking, knowing that more difficult stretches may come. But your mom will find her way through them. It might get hard. Everyone around her might get a little worn down, too. But she will get through it, and the hike continues."
Ch18 p250: Defining toughness
Since then, I have made it a regular practice to see a neurologist and pay closer attention to what my body is telling me. That relapse taught me the same lesson that football and coaching had been trying to teach me for years: toughness is not just grinding through the pain. Real toughness is knowing when to adjust, when to ease off, and when to protect your future so you can stay in the game.
